The regional vernacular of hay sheds and shade structures for cattle inspired this simple single slope form with a natural palette of materials. Elise May grew up on a farm near Amarillo and never forgot her roots and returned home after several years of school to become an oncologist and plastic surgeon. Although the building is close to the medical center, her desire was to create a space that conveyed a simple, rustic feeling but still sophisticated for her patients. The true timber frame reception and waiting area enclosed with glass and stone and warmth is added by a wood ceiling and floor. The floor plan allows patients to enter for cosmetic services or for clinical exams with Dr. May. The corridors continue the materiality expressed in the reception area and have access to a large covered outdoor patio and yard. Wall to wall windows provide an abundance of natural light and views of the landscape. The native landscape supports the local weather climate and is entirely on a drip irrigation system for water conservation.
